For the entirety of her high school career, Coach Mayo (named "Mayo" due to a shortened version of her maiden name, Maytorena) played on the Varsity team at Ponderosa High School, when it was a 5A school, earning several awards. She also played with Front Range Volleyball club during her high school years and earned appearances at Nationals every year. She was awarded a full-ride scholarship to the University of Wyoming, where she played as a starter all four years, earning several awards including Mountain West Player of the Week several times, Wyoming's Most Valuable Player, and Mountain West All-Conference Player. After graduating from Wyoming with a degree in Elementary Education (and later earning a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction in Reading and Writing from the University of Colorado Denver), she began coaching in the Denver area for
various volleyball clubs including Colorado Performance & COVA and her old high school, Ponderosa High School. She played indoor, sand, and grass volleyball after college but ultimately retired from playing and coaching when her two children were young. She came out of retirement to coach her daughter's Level 3 volleyball team at Conifer High School and then moved up to coach JV the following year. She began coaching club volleyball with Denver Juniors and continues with them today. This is her 2nd season as Head Coach at Lakewood High School.
Coach Mayo has two beautiful children, Isabel and Garrett. Isabel will attend CSU in the fall and Garrett will begin high school at Platte Canyon High School. She also spends her time with her 3 dogs (Cassi, Ro, and Auggie), and 3 cats (Dash, Flynn, and Meeko), while also fostering animals on the side. She likes to read books, hike the beautiful mountains of Colorado, and be with her family and friends.

We coach because we love the game of volleyball and believe in its power to shape confident, resilient, and capable young women. Our goal is to help athletes reach their full potential by building a strong foundation of skills, deepening their understanding of the game, and preparing them to compete at a high level — both on the court and in life.
Our program is built on the core values of excellence, love, a growth mindset, team over self, and discipline. These aren’t just words — they are lived out in how we train, communicate, and respond to challenges. We believe that success isn’t just about winning matches; it’s about developing athletes who can dig deep when things get hard, problem-solve as a team, and stay composed under pressure. True success is when the team relies on one another, read the game intelligently, and never stop adjusting or believing.
As coaches, we strive to be warm demanders — energetic, encouraging, and always pushing for more. We celebrate victories, but we also give honest feedback to help athletes grow. Mistakes are opportunities: our job is to guide players back to their training, challenge them to see the game through a strategic lens, and help them anticipate, adjust, and capitalize on what’s in front of them.
We lead with structure and clarity, but also adapt when the moment calls for flexibility. We welcome feedback and collaboration, but take full responsibility for making the decisions that shape our team. Above all, we coach with heart — because we care deeply about our players and the women they are becoming.
